English Talks Series – Spring Semester 2018

In the Spring Semester of 2018, the Language Centre held a series of talks in English by faculty members of the Technical University of Crete. The themes of the talks covered topics in technology, science, and the environment. The presentations were enthusiastically attended and very well-received by the student audience. The series will continue in the next academic year. The participation of our guest speakers was much appreciated; they were:

“Thinking out of the box - Pursuing a career in Greece after graduation” by Vaggelis Tripolitakis, Electronic & Computer Engineer, MSc 

Undoubtedly, the status of the job market in Greece has drastically changed during the last ten years. Nevertheless, a whole new bunch of opportunities emerged for talented and skilled individuals. Such opportunities will be illustrated in this lecture from a personal, 100% subjective point of view, under the common notion of proving common assumptions wrong.

"Graduate Studies Abroad and Study Scholarships" by Katerina Feggarou, Education Marketing Manager, Education Services British Council, Greece

This interesting talk on graduate studies in the UK along with information about the language testing required with the IELTS examinations was part of the Information event on "Graduate Studies Abroad and Study Scholarships" organized by the TUC Career Services Office.

“Development of a compact regenerative braking system for electric vehicles” by Savvas Piperidis, Laboratory of Intelligent Systems & Robotics, Production Engineering & Management

Ηost guest speaker Dr. Savvas Piperidis from the Intelligent Systems and Robotics Laboratory of the School of Production Engineering and Management expounded upon the principles of electric vehicles and the need for development in this area for both economic and environmental purposes.

"Entrepreneurship, research and development, and innovation in Crete and Greece" by Prof. Fotios Pasiouras, Co-Director of Research in Financial & Banking Management, Financial Engineering Laboratory, Production Engineering & Management, TUC.

On the framework of the Language Centre series talks, Professor Pasiouras from the School of Production Engineering & Management, gave a lecture on "Entrepreneurship, research and development, and innovation in Crete and Greece". Offering insight into the current situation both at a national level and specific to Crete, Prof. Pasiouras encouraged students to be mindful of innovation endeavours within an environment of opportunity over the next few years.

"Future Electric Power Systems" by Ass. Prof. Fotios Kanellos, Assistant Professor, Modelling and Optimal Operation of Electric Power Systems, Production Engineering & Management, TUC.

On May 9, 2018 the Language Centre was pleased to have Prof. Fotios Kanellos as its final speaker of this academic year. His presentation, entitled "Future Electric Power Systems" explained current delivery systems as well as possibilities for smart grids in the future. Well appreciated by the audience, the talk was a wonderful contribution to our series.
