English Talks Series – Spring Semester 2017

In the Spring Semester of 2017, the Language Centre held a series of talks in English by faculty members of the Technical University of Crete. The themes of the talks covered topics in technology, science, and the environment. The presentations were enthusiastically attended and very well-received by the student audience. The series will continue in the next academic year. The participation of our guest speakers was much appreciated; they were:

Professor Nikolaos Nikolaidis, School of Environmental Engineering

“Soils – Restoring Human Impacts”

In his talk “Soils – Restoring Human Impacts”, Professor Nikolaidis explained the impacts of land mismanagement within short-term planning. In drawing attention to the inter-connectivity of the Earth's biosphere, he conveyed the sense of urgency needed in altering our approach to food growth. Alternative methods of crop cultivation and animal husbandry were suggested among changes in our approach to sustain the world's growing population.

Ass. Professor Panayotis Partsinevelos, School of Mineral Resources Engineering

"Academic Illusions: studying in the US vs Greece - ethics, innovation & science"

The second guest of the Language Centre was Dr. Panayotis Partsinevelos who gave a talk on "Academic Illusions: studying in the US vs Greece - ethics, innovation & science". A first hand comparison of the Greek university system with that of the US should be both relevant and interesting to students, particularly in light of today's increasing level of interest in post-graduate study abroad. These insights and experiences about career perspectives are always very valuable for our students studies planning because we live in a world where education and specialization play a crucial role in young people’s life.

Ass. Professor Alexandros Vazakas, School of Architecture

"Architecture: between theory and practice"

Ass. Professor Alexandros Vazakas's talk provided an exciting insight into the creative process regarding a work of architecture from conception to construction. Dr Vazakas discussed the different phases of this complex and collective process, and how theories and concepts are often mutated, transformed and reevaluated during the different phases of implementation of an architectural work.

Professor Michalis Zervakis, School of Electronic, Electrical and Computer Engineering

“Issues on digital imaging and signal processing”

Professor Zervakis, as part of this semester’s English Talks Series, opened a window into the fascinating area of his own research, which involves digital imaging and signal processing. In relation to his focus on biomedical applications, Professor Zervakis noted examples, such as Cancer, Alzheimer’s, and Heart Disease on which the impact of such research is and will continue to be significantly effective for human health care.

Professor Vassilis Moustakis, School of Production Engineering and Management

“Issues on Supply Chain Management”

The last speaker of the English Talks Series of the Spring Semester 2017 was Professor Vassilis Moustakis who gave a talk on one of his main scientific research interests, i.e. Supply Chain Management. His introduction to the field emphasised the cross-disciplinary nature of supply chains with examples ranging from retail to water commodities.
